Lean, high-protein white fish with very little fat. A sensible everyday choice for families, and mild enough for children and older people who dislike strong fish.

Nutritional values are approximate, per 100 g raw edible portion, and vary with size and season. This is general information, not medical or dietary advice.

How to cook it

Fry whole after scoring the sides; grill over charcoal; or simmer in coconut sauce for samaki wa kupaka. Firm enough to hold together in a curry.

Questions

Does changu have many bones?

No — changu is one of the easiest reef fish to eat. It has a simple bone structure and few fine pin bones, which is exactly why it is the family favourite on this coast.

What size do they come in?

Typically 0.5–1.5 kg per fish. Tell us your preferred size and we will pick to match.

Can I have it filleted?

Yes. Choose your preparation at checkout — scaled, gutted, filleted, steaked or left whole.
