~165 kcal · 21 g protein · 9 g fat · exceptional omega-3, calcium, vitamin D and B12
Gram for gram and shilling for shilling, the most nutritious fish we sell. Eaten whole with the bones, sardines deliver more calcium than a glass of milk, plus very high omega-3 and vitamin D. As a small, short-lived fish they also carry the least mercury.
Nutritional values are approximate, per 100 g raw edible portion, and vary with size and season. This is general information, not medical or dietary advice.
Fry whole and crisp until the bones are edible. Also excellent grilled over charcoal, or stewed with tomato and onion.
Goes well with: Ugali, tomato, onion, lime, chilli
Every order is cleaned to your preference — scaled, gutted, filleted, cut into steaks or left whole. Choose at checkout.
Keep on ice or in the coldest part of the fridge (0–4 °C) and cook within 2 days of delivery. To freeze, pat dry, wrap tightly and freeze at −18 °C; use within 3 months. Never refreeze fish that has thawed.
Keeps: 2 days refrigerated · 3 months frozen
Yes — that is the point. Fried until crisp, sardine bones are soft and edible, and they are where the calcium is.
For omega-3 per shilling, considerably. They also carry far less mercury because they are small and short-lived.
Roughly 15–25, depending on the day's size.
